The South African footballer/midfielder, who plays for top-flight side Maritzburg United died today, two months after being struck by lightning during a friendly fixture.

A tearful Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia was trying to get hold of the family when contacted for comment.

“I just heard it myself but I’m just waiting for the family and I’ll confirm once I hear everything from the family,” Kadodia told this website.

“As the club we’ll also release the statement but I’m just waiting for the family now.”

In a statement on Facebook, the club described him as one its rising young stars and said the team was in mourning.

“We are extremely sad about the loss of Luyanda, an exciting young player with enormous potential,” said Maritzburg chairman Farook Kadodia in the statement.

“On behalf of Maritzburg United Football club, we would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Ntshangase family.”

Maritzburg United are currently fourth in South Africa’s Premier League. BBC reported that Ntshangase had risen though the club’s ranks and made his debut against Kaizer Chiefs two seasons ago. He was one of three players caught by the bolt of lightning during the match in KwaZulu-Natal.

The two others were only slightly hurt but Ntshangase suffered burns to his chest, South African media report.

This is the third time in as many years that Maritzburg United have been hit by the death of a player. In 2016, Mondli Cele lost his life in a tragic car accident, soon after their game against Orlando Pirates at the Harry Gwala Stadium.

This was followed by the passing of Mlondi Dlamini, who also passed away after being involved in a car accident in October 2017.
